Even worse, he starts failing his clients including a lottery ticket-hoarding senior citizen and a distraught mother of four. Gerry feels the full weight of the emotional clutter and out-of-date ideas that have been comforting and isolating him from the real, beautifully messy, world. Only when Gerry starts relating to his family and clients on a human level, and not a systematic one, might he see his life become organized once again. The American Dream has always come with enough space for everything one could imagine and the accompanying desire to acquire. But for some the cupboards get overfilled. The rooms get crammed with goods. Relationships no matter how strong fail under the weight of possessions. That is when, as Emerson said, “Things are in the saddle and ride mankind.” And that is when Gerry Rakes tries to help.

This is a sweet and funny book that explores our relationship with "things" through the lens of our relationships with family and friends. At the beginning of the novel, the narrator and pro organizer, Gerry Rakes thinks he has his life totally in order. He's even a bit smug about it. He thinks he can help anyone get their life organized with a few tools and tactics.This is soon put to the test. And the book really starts moving and being funny when Gerry's parents move in with him because they have lost their home and money. With this and many more instances with his organizing clients he is not able to keep or get organized.
I won't ruin the end but it has a really positive and believable message of how we need to be empathetic to truly understand, help, love and laugh with the people in our lives. Its laugh out loud funny at some points and poignant at others.
